KAW NATION  POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE:                                              MUSEUM DIRECTOR

Job Summary : This position is responsible for the overall daily operation and maintenance of the Kaw Nation Museum. This includes the curatorial of collection, archiving, cataloging, arrangement, and exhibits at the Kanza Museum, Kanza Health Clinic, and other tribal locations as needed. A background in Native American Plains Indians and their language is helpful but not required.

Skills/Qualifications : Project Management, Research Skills, Reporting Research Results, Presentation Skills, Initiative, Dealing with Complexity and the ability to work well with Multiple Agencies.

Education :  Bachelor’s Degree in Native American Studies, Archeology, Anthropology, Humanities, Museology, Fine Arts, Liberal Arts or related fields, or at least three (3) years relevant experience preferred. Desire to complete educational trainings related Tribal Historic Preservation, (NAGPRA, NEPA) which include working with Chilocco Indian School Cemetery and Tribal property’s, museum procedures and historic preservation needs for the Kaw Nation.  

Duties and Responsibilities: 

1. Development and implementation of the daily operations of the Kanza Museum; includes organizing, maintain/monitor Kaw collections, regulating the climate, inspect for insect infestations and ultraviolet damage to artifacts. Must complete all reports required by all agencies and immediate supervisors.
2. Responsible for locating and caring of important documents, photographs, audio, video and tapes belonging to the Kaw Nation, including the ability of tribal government to assume State Historical Preservation Officer duties. Responsible for preserving and entering all information into the computer database via scanner.
3. Advance job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; specialized trainings related to historic preservation; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
4. Enhances organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments relating to Kanza history and preservation.
5. Responsible for historic preservation activities including, but not limited to, identifying and maintaining inventories of culturally significant properties, nominating properties to the national and tribal registers of historic places, working towards ability to conduct Section 106 reviews of Federal agency projects on tribal lands, and conducting educational programs on the importance of preserving historic properties.
6. Effectively educate Kaw Nation tribal citizens in the history and prehistory of the Kaw People. Execute activities that further aid in the continued success of the Museum that promote heritage and culture.
7. Schedule tours for local schools and organizations for educational purposes.
8. Other duties as assigned by the Chair of Kaw Nation.

All new hires will be required by the Kaw Nation to submit to pre-employment drug screen and a background check.  Failure to pass the drug screen or background will lead to withdrawal of the job offer or termination of employment.
